A five-star boutique hotel on the shores of Lake Windermere; P's (tried and true) Travel Tips; what to pack; a film about the glamorous Côte d'Azur, and more
We’re back with our regular series, ‘Listening, Reading, Thinking, Shopping, Watching’, which is essentially a glimpse inside my mind: open tabs, Screenshots folder, search history, Notes app, etc. These round-ups are a carefully curated compilation of things that I’ve seen and have been inspired by over the course of the week or so. This one is a little different, though, as
and I worked on this instalment together, each of us contributing our own thoughts and inspirations, including his (tried and true) Travel Tips; a few items on our packing list; a film that will have you booking the next trip to the Côte d'Azur, three great books about travel, and more…PS This email may be truncated in your inbox. BOOKMARK /Langdale Chase
The winding road from London to Edinburgh took an unexpected turn one summer, leading us to the Lake District and a breathtaking discovery. Nestled on the shores of Lake Windermere, Langdale Chase emerged like a secret waiting to be uncovered—an imposing Elizabethan gabled house with a story etched into its weathered stones.
The hotel made its way back into my memory this morning, when P remarked that it had re-opened its doors in November of last year, after undergoing an extensive 12-month restoration.
The Grade II-listed country house hotel, situated on the shores of England’s largest lake in Cumbria, was originally built in 1891 as a private residence for Edna Howarth, the wife of a wealthy Manchester businessman. It was later transformed into a hotel in 1930, preserving its timeless charm and elegance.
Thirty rooms now invite guests to experience its history, each uniquely furnished and many offering sweeping views of the lake. The surrounding six acres, transformed by renowned landscape architect Thomas Hayton Mawson, tell another story—a setting that blends natural beauty with careful design. Beyond the picturesque setting, guests can enjoy an AA Rosette-winning restaurant serving local cuisine, afternoon tea on the terrace with lake views, and a range of outdoor activities. From tennis and sailing to horseback riding and lake swimming, Langdale Chase offers a chance to experience the beauty of the Lake District in the most wonderful way. We can’t wait to return.
